Goalkeeping Program
Great goalkeepers are the essential to a great team. Great teams make great clubs.
Our goalkeeping program focuses on improving:
-
- Technical skills ( handling, shot-stopping, diving, various catching techniques, scoop saves, punching, cross-taking, and various forms of distribution)
-
- Physical fitness (key drills involving practicing the set positions, short-distance acceleration, lateral changes of direction, and specific fitness exercises like plyometrics for explosive power).
-
- Positional play (taking up the correct positions at various moments, including the correct distance and angles to take up for certain scenarios)
-
- Sport psychology (focusing on the key attributes that GKs need for the modern game, including communication, organisation, focus, confidence, bravery and motivation)

Strategic Development Roles
The appointment of a Director of Football (DOF) or Coach Development Officer (CDO) are two options that the FAOI offers to every club.
The DOF assists with every single component of club affairs, from financial stability to brand growth. The role also includes defining core values, engaging with all stakeholders, building strong relationships with members, and managing day-to-day operations.
The CDO primarily focuses on coach education and development. Part of their brief is coach recruitment and coach retention. Each coach in the club wants to develop and improve, and the CDO will assist each coach to become better in all aspects of the game (planning, organising, implementing, analysing, and reflecting).
Frequently Asked Questions
Contact the FAOI now by clicking on the 'Got a Question?' tab and ask what role(s) your club require and what options are available for your club.
The CDO looks after all the formal and informal education and developmental needs of all coaches and other volunteers within the club. The CDO's role is to raise the coaching standard within the club by improving every single coach's ability to coach effectively.
All GKs in the club should get specialised GK training, ideally on a weekly basis. It is a specialised playing position, and warrants specialised training. It is difficult for outfield coaches to give the care and attention to GKs within a session, especially if the squad training numbers are large.
The training should take place weekly, or at least every fortnight.
The DOF has many roles, from overseeing all 'on the pitch' football-related issues, to developing a club strategic football plan, to recruiting and retaining coaches and other volunteers within the club, plus many more duties.
