Sports Psychology

The Football Academy of Ireland believe in marginal gains and picking up an extra 1 % in every element of sport, from improving a player’s motivational levels, to becoming more resilient, to strengthing ones own self-confidence levels, or even becoming better at managing your time or setting goals.

Players do need help with forming coping mechanism to deal with stress, looking at ways to become more assertive on the pitch, developing a growth mindset, and perfecting a match-day routine. We also find that some players have problems with sleep recovery and implementing appropriate rest and recovery strategies.

Whatever the issue, we are here to help in all aspects of mental strength.

Got a question?

Mental skills need to be learnt and mastered as much as technical skills and play a vital part in match-day performance.

Whether you are a player, parent, coach or club, the Football Academy of Ireland offers you the opportunity to discuss a broad range of topics. Players may need help with fitness, or sport psychology issues, whereas parents may need to discuss topics relating to their children’s current or future playing situation. Coaches may want to talk to an experienced mentor about their coaching options and clubs may need to explore options to take their club to the next level on and off the pitch.

Whatever help or guidance is needed, a good first step is to book a consultation with the FAOI and seek the professional support or advice you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

The first thing to address is what exactly the issue is. Is it just your opinion or also the opinion of others, and most importantly, does your child feel the same way?

Once you are all in agreement and everyone feels there is an issue, the next step is to be specific and identify what exactly the problem is. Accepting there is a problem with performance and identifying the issue are the first steps that should be taken.

Setting out plans and discussing strategies to be mentally stronger can only benefit players' performance.

Every player wants to be resilient, confident, motivated, committed, and in control of their performance. Every player wants to be focused on match days and to be able to eliminate distractions.

But this doesn't happen out of the blue. Sometimes we have to work on these elements and put plans in place to strengthen and develop these vital components of the gme.

The sport psychology talks are open to players of all ages and genders. From the young to the more senior player, it is never too late to improve your mental side of the game.

For a parent to discuss issues that may be happening to their child and seek advice, well, that is good parenting.

For a coach to ask questions that may benefit them as coaches and thus benefitting their players in turn, well then that just practice.

if a club wants to discuss having a service within their club to handle sport psychology issues, including talks on developing mentally strong players, that is very good planning and taking extremely good care of their members.
